What to look out for when choosing a snorkel mask
The snorkel mask allows us to see underwater. Since we want to experience the underwater world while snorkeling, this is of course crucial.
The mask construction
Make sure your preferred mask is a “real” scuba or snorkel mask. By this we mean that it is made for diving or snorkeling. There are many cheap diving goggles in the supermarket, but you will not be satisfied with them for long.
Properly designed snorkel masks are made of shatterproof glass and are made to withstand the pressure when you’re making deeper dives. When snorkeling you don’t get that deep, but it is still important to have a good quality there.

The shape of the snorkel mask
When choosing a diving goggle or snorkel mask, choose one with a relatively small volume. This means that the air space enclosed in the mask is not larger than necessary. This makes clearing out easier if water gets in. Also, it’s easier to balance if you dive below the surface. Choose a snorkel mask with a good field of vision.
How to check if the diving goggles fit
The fit of the diving goggles is crucial, but can be done in a few simple steps:
- Put the mask on without putting the band around your head
- Breathe in gently through your nose
- Release the mask
- If the mask just sticks to your face through the vacuum you create when you inhale, then it’s a reasonably good fit.
Put on the mask strap and breathe out through your nose. You should be able to push the exhaled air out from under the skirt without too much effort. Otherwise, it will be difficult to empty the mask when water enters.
Wear the mask for a few minutes and note the areas where the mask puts uncomfortable pressure on your face.
Typical places where snorkel masks pinch are the underside of the tip of the nose, between the eyes and on the forehead. If the goggles are comfortable in all of these places, you’re well on your way to getting a good mask.

Choosing the right snorkel
A snorkel is a fairly basic but extremely important piece of equipment. Choose one that isn’t too long, because the longer the snorkel, the harder it is to inhale.
A medium length makes it easy to breathe while being tall enough to see out of the water.
If you choose a snorkel set, you get everything in one anyway. Ultimately, the choice of snorkel set is up to you. Personally we use the Cressi snorkel set and we are very happy with it.
