Buying a children’s bicycle helmet – what to look out for
Here are a few small tips on what to look out for when buying a children’s bicycle helmet.
Design
Although the design and pattern of the helmet does not contribute to safety, your children will much prefer the helmet on. Especially if you can still choose it yourself. So include your children in the purchase. Pick out some safe kids bike helmets in advance, but let your kids make the final decision.

Find the right fit for children’s bicycle helmets
To find the right helmet size for your child, wrap a string around their forehead and then place that string on a tape measure. Most toddler helmets fit heads around 47cm. Some helmets also include multiple sizes of inner pads to give you a more snug fit.
Once you have found the right helmet for your child’s size range, you should position it horizontally and low on the forehead, about an inch above the eyebrows. The side straps should be adjusted so that they form a V just below your ears.
The chin strap on the helmet should be buckled so that it fits snugly under the chin and only one or two fingers can fit between the strap and your chin. Push against the helmet to ensure it cannot rock forward or backward. Finally, ask your child to yawn, making sure the helmet is pressing on their head as they do so. It should feel snug, but not so tight that it’s uncomfortable or causes a pressure headache.
